My daughter/son is a high school trumpet player, what mouthpiece should they use?

Ultimately the student should follow the teachings and advice from their private lesson teacher as they see this student on a weekly basis.  We typically recommend high school students to start with our Pickett YA 3, or Pickett 3C.

The YA3 and 3C are medium rim/cup combinations that help promote proper muscle development.  The early high school years are extremely critical to proper brass basics and a mouthpiece that will allow correct fundamentals and muscle development is paramount for the students success.

We often see students playing on far too large mouthpieces since there is an immediate change in the sound they can get from them.  The larger rim and often large volume cups can produce a full and rich sound - for a short period of time.  When a student transitions to quickly to a to large of a mouthpiece, bad habits will set in as a survival technique.  Bad habits include using to much pressure, squeezing and creating resistance in the chest, shoulders, throat, or embouchure that lead to very inefficient playing and can be very tiring.

Transitioning to properly sized mouthpieces and instruments can support a players progression significantly, ultimately leading to a more rewarding and better foundational experience.
